Detailed description
The oldest sections of the historic castle gate, through which the Große Burgstraße runs today, date back to the 13th century. The structure with its defiant tower and black and red brick decoration was added in the late Middle Ages and the curious bronze dome dates from the early Baroque period. Part of the medieval city wall has also been preserved here.
The castle monastery was also built in the 13th century as the home of the Dominican order in 1229. With its impressive vault paintings and decorative floors, it is now considered one of the most important medieval monastery complexes in northern Germany and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lübeck since 1987. The castle monastery looks back on an eventful history and has had many functions in the past:
After the Reformation, the city used it as a poorhouse, later as a courthouse and remand prison and finally as a cultural forum.
Since 2015, the lavishly restored monument has been part of the museum ensemble of the European Hanseatic Museum.
Tip: Discover the castle complex from a new perspective on a canal and harbour cruise.
