Detailed description
It is thanks to the success of Lübeck's merchants that the city became so important in the Middle Ages. The Holsten Gate is a proud symbol of Lübeck as a free city.
The city gate was built in the years 1464-1478 according to Dutch models. It served on the one hand for defense, but also for representation. The gilded inscription CONCORDIA DOMI FORIS PAX (Concord within, Peace without) shines unmistakably above the arch of the double tower with the round-arched passage gate. Almost every visitor is amazed at the steep slope and the sinking of the south tower. Since only the towers stand isolated on a "swell grate" and the heavy middle section rests on them at the same time, the towers sank unevenly into the boggy ground. In 1863, the Holsten Gate presented an absolutely ruinous sight. With only one majority vote, the citizens decided to preserve the gate and began extensive renovation work. It was not until 70 years later that the sinking could be stopped.
Inside the Holsten Gate, a museum displays interesting facts about "The Power of Trade". Historical ship models, armor, weapons, legal instruments and trade goods give an insight into the time of the Hanseatic League.
The museum's digital offering provides exciting insights from home.
