Provost Church Sacred Heart

The Propsteikirche Herz Jesu an der Parade is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Lübeck and the only one on the historic old town island.
Not far from Lübeck Cathedral, this brick basilica was built between 1888 and 1891, giving Lübeck's Catholics their own church again after the Reformation 350 years ago. The former neo-Gothic interior was completely changed as a result of the liturgical reform after 1973 and replaced by a free-standing altar. Since 1955, the crypt of the church has housed a memorial to the Lübeck martyrs, the three chaplains Hermann Lange, Eduard Müller and Johannes Prassek who worked at the Herz-Jesu-Kirche, as well as the Protestant pastor Karl Friedrich Stellbrink, who were executed together in 1943. The documentation on the work of the clergy during the National Socialist era and the political developments at the time is interesting. Because of this connection to the martyrs, the Herz Jesu Kirche was named a provost church.

The nativity celebration on 24 December at 3:30 pm (admission 3 pm) offers churchgoers an opportunity to sing both festively and cheerfully about the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ with a whole series of Christmas carols. Before that, the parish team invites you to the "Open Church" from 12:00 to 14:00 with harp music by Zoe Winter, the reading of the Christmas story, a small craft corner for children and a contemplative atmosphere. Visitors can be blessed at the crib.

On Christmas Day, 25 December, we celebrate High Mass at 11:15 a.m. with festive music, the Lübeck Provost's Choir, soloists and an instrumental ensemble sing the Missa brevis in D major by W.A. Mozart, conducted by church regional musician Heiner Arden. On Boxing Day, 26.12., we will celebrate mass at 11:15 and 19:00.
