Detailed description
Where do we come from, who are we, what is sacred to us and how can we open ourselves up to other cultures?
The St. Annen Museum is one of the most beautiful medieval museums in the world. The combination of top-class ancient art and impressive medieval monastery architecture with two romantic inner courtyards creates a dense atmosphere.
The museum's internationally acclaimed focus is on the largest collection of North German carvings, the textile treasures from Gdansk and valuable examples of German and Dutch painting from the 15th and 16th centuries, which also bear witness to the transition to the Reformation, Renaissance and Humanism. High-ranking works by Bernt Notke, Hermen Rode, Hans Memling, Benedict Dreyer, Jacob van Utrecht, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Hans Kemmer are among them.
In addition, the extensive cultural history collection provides a good overview of the multifaceted life in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Such a wealth of works of art is rarely preserved within one city. The St. Annen Museum now offers a free
e-guide for smartphones and tablets, which takes you to 50 highlights of the exhibition and shows additional pictures and comparative photos.
