Green oasis in Lübeck's old town

In the centre of Lübeck's old town, between the Heiligen-Geist Hospital and the Behnhaus Drägerhaus Museum, lies a small park: the Bürgergärten. A hidden green oasis consisting of several interconnected gardens offering peace and relaxation in the midst of the hustle and bustle.

To explore the Bürgergärten, look for the Geibel monument and turn right into the cobbled alley. This is the entrance to the idyllic oasis. In the Bürgergarten, visitors will find green paths, seating areas and various sculptures that add to the ambience.

What makes this place special, however, is the unique view of the backs of the representative town houses that characterise Lübeck's Old Town, a World Heritage Site.

Not only the gardens themselves, but also the sculptures in them bear witness to generosity and cultural diversity. The bronze sculpture of an original by Georg Kolbe, a memorial to the booksellers who died in the First World War and other works of art from various sources such as foundations and the Günter Grass House enrich the Bürgergärten and make them a unique cultural experience.
