Salt warehouses

Lübeck

A popular photo motif!

Directly next to the Holsten Gate on the banks of the Trave River are the historic salt warehouses, a group of warehouses in the brick Renaissance style, in which salt deliveries from Lüneburg were stored, which were made via the Stecknitz Canal, completed in 1398. From Lübeck, the salt was shipped on to Scandinavia: an extremely lucrative business for the Hanseatic city and the basis of its wealth at the time, as salt was indispensable for preserving many foods.
