Detailed description
Right next to the Holsten Gate on the banks of the River Trave are the historic salt warehouses, a group of brick Renaissance warehouses in which salt deliveries from Lüneburg were stored via the Stecknitz Canal, which was completed in 1398. From Lübeck, the salt was shipped on to Scandinavia: an extremely lucrative business for the Hanseatic city and the basis of its wealth at the time, as salt was essential for the preservation of many foods.
