Description
Detailed description
The origin of St. Mary's Church is closely connected with the city history of Lübeck. Shortly after the founding of Lübeck, there was already a market church at the current location of St. Mary's. To this day, it is considered the church of the city's leading citizens and council. At the beginning of the 13th century, St. Mary's Church was still a Romanesque basilica, then began its conversion into a Gothic cathedral, which was built of brick due to the lack of quarries in the North German Plain. Particularly worth seeing, besides the impressive architecture, are the Dead Man's Dance windows, the astronomical clock, the Fredenhagen altar and the chapel with the bells that fell in 1942. Details can be found here.
A special experience are the various musical events in St. Mary's.
You can experience the interior of the church virtually here.
We have prepared a short digital tour for you. And the bells and organ of St. Mary's already invite you to a listening visit.
