INNSECT HOTEL FROM WASTE
HOLIDAY INN LÜBECK
Behind the Holiday Inn Lübeck, there are two insect hotels by the name of “Holiday INNsect Hotels” which attract countless new “guests”. These were accomplished by apprentices as joint projects during the lockdown between the winter of 2020 and the spring of 2021. They built the insect hotels from old Euro pallets, tree cuttings, hay and other leftover material, making sure that they consist of different sections in order to offer the insects a wide range of nesting options. The apprentices were fascinated by the prospect of creating something new and useful from materials which would normally be disposed of. This has prompted a new way of thinking that in the view of hotel director Christian Schmidt is priceless.
The project shows that something valuable and useful can emerge from seemingly useless materials. This is a good example of how a contribution can be made to protecting the environment and promoting nature with creativity and minimal investment. Insect hotels offer valuable habitats to various kinds of insects, thereby helping to preserve species diversity. The project is also a positive example of how apprentices can take the initiative and realise sustainable projects through their joint commitment.
The Holiday Inn Lübeck team is proud to take its responsibility for the environment and the community seriously. Various sustainability initiatives have been implemented, among them energy-efficient lighting, the use of environmentally-friendly cleaning agents and a recycling programme. The hotel also supports local charitable organisations to maximise the positive impact on the community.
