How we preserve the North Pole

Home of Father Christmas

Our Christmas Capital of Northern Germany is taking a leap forward. Let’s work together towards a fair, climate-friendly and sustainable Christmas city! Each of us can help, there are lots of different ways to do it. Of course, there is a focus on ecology in the form of reusable instead of disposable products, recycling and upcycling and the increased use of regional products as well as the use of eco-electricity.

What we already do:

  • Vegetarian and vegan options will be added to the Christmas Market menu.
  • We prefer to use reusable crockery, as waste prevention is always better than waste recycling.
  • Our Lübeck Christmas Market cups are deliberately designed without a year, so they can be used for several years. The mugs are made in Europe.
  • The Christmas lights are powered by green electricity. Only LED lights are used.
  • All Christmas trees at the Lübeck Christmas Market come from regional forestry (Schleswig-Holstein).
  • At the end of the Christmas market, the trees are used for energy recovery in thermal power stations.
  • As part of the "A Tännchen, please" campaign, all Christmas trees sold are replanted after the Christmas holidays.
  • We actively promote the use of public transport to the Lübeck Christmas markets and provide a free park and ride shuttle service.
  • Social sustainability: In cooperation with E-Punkt, a hut ist provided on the Schrangen for the presentation of non-profit local associations.
  • Fair pay for employees and compliance with statutory working hours are part of social sustainability and are equally important to us.
  • We prefer to work with regional and local service providers.
  • We bundle our own transport journeys. Where possible, we use our cargo bike.

Help us go this way together. If you see anything that we need to do or improve, we would be happy to hear from you at nachhaltig@luebeck-tourismus.de. Thank you very much and
Ho Ho Ho!
